Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest #15
Our third year of problem competition began with these 5 original, unpublished, flawless, DEFERRED TRIPLES, each with 9 to 11 pieces and 5 to 6 star moves. A tight race was anticipated, but turned out to be a runaway.
"The Exit", by Roy Little, led from beginning to end. Its trade, squeeze, and 2-pitch buildup to the decisive 3-for-1 garnered almost half of the total votes (7 of 15) and crowned its composer as new World Champion.
Tie for a distant second, with 3 votes each, were "No Escape", a maze of caught-from-behind triple jumps, by Ed Atkinson, and "Trapezoid", a subtle preamble to an incredible finish, by Louis Cowie.
Fourth with 2 votes was "Mind over Matter", an early sacrifice and steal countered by a startling 3-for-3 by Melvyn Green; an impressive departure from his famous giant pure stroke style.
Trailing with no votes was the outclassed "Sacrificial Lamb", by Bill Salot
The contest had 258 visitors. All are invited to actively participate as voters or composers in future contests.
