Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest 71 - Pitches - Results

The winner with 6 votes, featuring 2 very deceptive deferred pitches, was “Line-up”, by the late Ed Atkinson. Gary Ellison, Igor Martynov (Germany), and Liam Stephens (Ireland) voted for it. Ed won 4 of the 6 contests in 2023, making him Problemist of the Year for the 3rd consecutive year, and for the 6th time overall, breaking Roy Little’s 5-time record.

Second with 3 votes, demonstrating an extremely counterintuitive initial pitch into a surprising bind, was “Landmine”, by Jim Loy. Lloyd Gordon (Canada) and Don Myles voted for it.

Third with 2 votes, requiring 3 sacrifices into a steal, was “Splinters”, by the late Roy Little. George Hay voted for it.

Last with no votes was “Rubik’s Cube”, by Bill Salot. It was the only problem with terms to play and draw.

The contest had 140 visitors, and a much appreciated 11 of them voted, making it a nice holiday event.

On the International Voters’ Ladder for 2023 only), George Hay picked the most winners, while Don Myles and Liam Stephens (Ireland) had the highest winner-picking % among those who voted in more than 2 contests.

1. Gary Ellison, 2 wins in 2 tries (100%)

Wilma Wolverton, 1 win in 1 try (100%)

2. Don Myles, 3 wins in 4 tries (75%)

Liam Stephens (Ireland), 3 wins in 4 tries (75%)

3. George Hay, 4 wins in 6 tries (67%)

Igor Martynov (Germany), 2 wins in 3 tries (67%)

4. Lloyd Gordon (Canada), 3 wins in 6 tries (50%)

We will start a new ladder for the year 2024.

The neat little pitches in this contest are well matched. The clue that they exist may be of some benefit to solvers. The settings may be solvable by good players like you. They are somewhat similar in size, length, and number of Kings.

You are invited to view them all animated at this web site. The most popular entry will be decided by the votes of website visitors like you. Your vote will also let you see immediately how others are voting. There have not been many voters so far this year. More are needed to keep these contests going.

If you choose to e-mail Bill Salot at wjsalot@comcast.net, disclosing how you voted, you will be put on the International Voters’ Ladder to determine who the best winner-picker is. Voters on the upper rungs of the ladder are published with the results of each contest. At the end of the year, we will identify the Voter-of-the-Year.
