Unofficial World Championship Checker Problem Composing Contest 69

Kingless Problems

Results

This quartet of kingless, game or game-like problems drew 122 visitors to the contest web site. Only 3 of them voted, an all-time contest low and an embarrassment to the composers, who can only assume that their compositions were not impressive. The one Contest 69 problem that arose in a competitive game, and corrected a recognized Grandmaster, received no votes. If participation does not pick up in the near future, the continuation of these contests is in jeopardy.

"Twister", with two votes, was the winner of this contest. It was composed by the late Ed Atkinson. Lloyd Gordon (Canada) voted for it. "OOPS!", by Bill Salot, was runner-up with only the vote by George Hay. "Monday", by Jim Loy, and "Lump of Sugar", by the late Roy Little, trailed with 0 votes.

Rungs 6 and 7 reversed on the International Voters’ Ladder, which now stands as follows:

1. Don Myles, 8 wins in 12 tries (67%)

2. George Hay, 21 wins in 37 tries (56.8%)

3. Liam Stephens (Ireland), 19 wins in 34 tries (55.9%)

. Kathy Wirthwein, 15 wins in 27 tries (55.6%)

5. Gene Ellison, 11 wins in 23 tries (48%)

6. Lloyd Gordon (Canada), 14 wins in 31 tries (46.9%)

7. Wilma Wolverton, 6 wins in 13 tries (46.2%)

8. Slava Gorin (Russia), 11 wins in 26 tries (42%)

9. Gary Ellison, 5 wins in 14 tries (36%)

Eighteen (18) others have either picked fewer than 36% winners or voted in fewer than 9 contests.

Kingless problems are sometimes favored because of their relatively natural appearance, as if they arose during a game. But we often forget the game probably was poorly played to allow a worthwhile problem to develop. Draws are sometimes disfavored because most of them are less exciting than wins. But escapes can be just as exciting as wins. The dandy, original, unpublished, kingless draws in Contest 69 demonstrate both concepts.

You are invited to view them all animated at this website. The most popular entry will be decided by the votes of website visitors like you. Your vote will also let you see immediately how others are voting. If you choose to e-mail Bill Salot wjsalot@comcast.net, disclosing how you voted, you will be put on the International Voters’ Ladder to determine who the best winner-picker is. Voters on the upper rungs of the ladder are published with the results of each contest. If you want to contribute your own original, unpublished, checker problem for use in a future contest, please send it to the same address.
