Contest Results

Compound strokes facilitate combinations of ideas. The winner of Contest 59 in a landslide was Ed Atkinson’s Geometric. It was his 2nd win in the 4 contests this year, making him Unofficial Problemist of the Year. Geometric’s sudden, clean-cut, "Zugzwang" finish contributed to its lopsided victory with 7 votes, including votes by Tony Gallagher (UK), George Hay, Don Myles, and Kathy Wirthwein. Second with 3 votes was Eureka! By Leo Springer (Netherlands). Its unusual "lock" finish drew votes from Lloyd Gordon (Canada) and Liam Stephens (Ireland). Trailing with one vote each were Behind Enemy Lines by the late Roy Little and Delirious by Bill Salot. Slava Goren (Russia) voted for Delirious.

Contest 59 had 102 visitors, 12 of whom voted, both down from previous contests, due to holidays.

The current International Voters' Ladder standings are below. Note the remarkable winning streak!

1 – Mark Sokolovsky, has picked 7 winners in 8 tries (88%)

2 – Liam Stephens (Ireland), 16 wins in 27 tries (59%)

3 – Kathy Wirthwein, 12 wins in 23 tries (52.2%)

4 – George Hay, 14 wins in 27 tries (51.9%) – his 9th consecutive win, extending his record streak!

5 – Gene Ellison, 10 wins in 21 tries (48%)

6 – Wilma Wolverton, picked 4 wins in 9 tries (44%)

7 – Lloyd Gordon (Canada), 8 wins in 22 tries (36%)

8 – Slava Gorin (Russia), 7 wins in 20 tries (35%)

9 – Gary Ellison, 4 wins in 13 tries (31%)

17 others have either picked fewer than 31% winners or voted in fewer than 8 contests.

Compound Strokes

Giant strokes come in two basic varieties. The most common are "sweeps" that culminate with the removal of many pieces in a single crushing blow. Less common are "compound" strokes that remove many pieces in a cascade of consecutive alternating shorter jumps by both sides. Examples are here in Contest 59. This international quartet of good, original, unpublished, animated, compound strokes also each include an element of easy afterplay.

The most popular entry will be decided by the votes of site visitors like you. Your vote will also let you see immediately how others are voting. If you choose to e-mail Bill Salot (wjsalot@comcast.net), disclosing how you voted, you will be put on the International Voters' Ladder to determine who the best winner-picker is. Voters on the upper rungs of the ladder are published with the results of each contest.
